Teaching Tips

I consistently get DM’s from people asking if I recommend a specific exercise for helping their hip pain and tightness.

They usually start out saying that they saw a social media post claiming that “One exercise will take all of your hip & low back pain away.”  or “Your life will change when you start doing this one exercise.”

I absolutely cannot stand those posts! It’s the trend that just won’t end!

I’m sure you’ve seen them- “POV: You start doing this exercise and all your… (insert a problem)… goes away.”

I understand why influencers make them. They get great visibility and they always go viral. But at what cost?

Misleading YOU and confusing YOU is the cost, and I’m not okay with it.

My problem with those types of posts is that I rarely ever see any clarification in the caption that explains that the exercise may be good to help them with their specific issue, but it also needs to be combined with other exercises and other strategies to truly make a difference.  Just like one magical food won’t fix issues with your gut microbiome, one single exercise won’t fix years of issues with your body.

  1. Treat more than the symptoms: It takes a full body approach to get better and stay better. It will never just be one muscle that is causing the issue and just because you feel something in your hips, doesn’t mean that is the source of the problem.
  2. Stretching your hip flexors more isn’t the answer: Muscles can feel tight without actually being tight. Hip flexors can feel chronically tight if they are weak, overstretched, or even overworked due to an instability in the pelvis or spine. Weakness in the abdominals and the glutes can contribute to the problem. If you find that you are constantly needing to stretch, it is time to try strengthening instead.
  3. Don’t be scared to work your hip flexors: Hip flexors get a bad rap and people don’t like to feel their hip flexors working, but they are just like any other muscle. They need to be strong to not only support your hips, but also your spine! (*Fun Fact: One of the main hip flexors- The Psoas attaches to all 5 lumbar vertebrae!)
  4. Total body mobility: In particular, mobility in the ankles and the thoracic spine greatly impacts the hips.
  5. Better Breathing: Breathing is so underrated! Good breathing promotes better muscle relaxation and engagement. The diaphragm in our ribs works in tandem with your pelvic floor. It is one of the most important relationships in the body!
  6. Work your hip joints in all directions: The hip joint is classified as a ball and socket joint, which enables the leg to move in all directions – flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal rotation, external rotation, and circumduction. In order to have balanced hips, you must train the hips in every way!
  7. Don’t push through your pain/popping: Take it from me, that can just make things worse & cause inflammation! It will be worth it to take a step back, fix the root of the problem, and then you won’t be nervous about moving for fear of pain.
  8. Add support: Using props in your workouts is an amazing way to build strength and give your body support and feedback. Bands, blocks, mini-balls (just to name a few) will be your best friends.  (Check out my blog with all of my favorite props and how to use them).

I know that may seem like a lot of things to do, but lucky for you, this is exactly what I go through in my signature Heal Your Hips Program

My most toxic trait is giving too much information, but I would rather go up in flames for telling you too much than give you false hope that a quick and easy solution exists.

As someone who has overcome hip issues and helped many others do the same, I know there are no quick fixes. Stretching alone won’t solve all of your issues. Resting and taking a break from exercise won’t solve all of your issues. Nor will a single exercise.

But a well-rounded plan that includes all of these considerations will.

Here’s the good news ↓

You don’t have to navigate this journey alone.
